Public transportation and the Olympic Games
Centre for Budapest Transport provided the case for the last stage of the 2014/2015 case competition season. We had some time to work on the case before the organizers formed teams from the twelve finalists. At the morning of the competition, I met a lot of acquaintances who were my opponents many times earlier.
Finally, we started to work with my new teammates: Zombor Berezvai, Tamás Nagy, Viktor Lendvai.
‘At the competition everyone made a quick presentation and summarized his own ideas. Thereafter, I also told my opinion and asked question about ideas. We gladly recognized, our ideas were not so far from each other. Therefore, next goal was to make a comprehensive solution from our proposals, and then we divided the work among each other. Everybody was open-minded to listen to criticism and was willing to reconsider his original concept. “(Viktor)
The group dynamic worked well, we could think and work together. At the beginning, I believed that we will have enough time for everything, but in the end, we almost ran out of time and finished the presentation in the last minute. (Zombor)
We were the unlucky (but finally the lucky team) who did not have any time to practice the presentation. On the other hand, we had the opportunity to listen our opponents’ solutions after our presentation. To sum all the presentations, every team focused on something else. Therefore, we could not compare the presentation easily, so we had to wait till the award ceremony.
The team awards results come to light. We agreed with my teammates, that our teamwork went well, so we anxiously waited for the results. Then, the all-day stress replaced with indescribable joy, when the jury announced that our team won the team competition. The ceremony continued with the individual awards.
The best presentation skills award was a big surprise for me, because I think this is my weakness. Two years before, in a competition final, I did not take part in presentation, because I did not have enough self-confidence to present our solution to the prestigious jury. I was afraid that, I mess our presentation up. Of course, I have participated numerous competitions since then, on which I tried to overcome these fears and improve my presentation skills. I think it goes without saying, then how uplifting it was to win a prize, which demonstrates an improvement in my weakness.
The „Case Solver of the Year Award scoring system consists of three main areas. Firstly, we can collect point in the competition season if we perform well in certain competitions. Secondly, we get points for our proposals for the last case. Last but not least, we get points from the Team Competition results. We can see that, this award is partly individual, because we get our point largely from team results during the year and „Case Solver of the Year Team Competition”. Therefore, I would like to thank you all of my former teammates who participated at least one competition with me.
The previous year winner, Tamás Rolek mentioned: „This scoring system represents well the labour market, where you get into your organization as individual, but you work in teams and finally you get individual and team-level evaluation as well.” I couldn’t agree more with his statement. I would like to add just one thing to this. These competitions illustrate very well that, great things only with selfless teamwork and great teammates can be achieved.
