Case Interview Workshop – A Summary
Case Interview Workshop by Greg – A Summary
The 3 hour workshop conducted by Greg at the Indian School of Business was highly sought after. Although over 60 students had registered for it, the participation was truncated at 10 students to maintain a high level of interaction.
Greg started the session by explaining the interview process at most consulting firms and identifying the preparation level of the students. This was followed by a short 30 min session on resources available for preparation and the structure of a case interview. The emphasis was on having a logical thought process and thinking out aloud approach rather than learning a lot of different frameworks. A short demonstration of a case interview was a revelation for most students as it replicated the questions and stress environment of a real case interview. The participant was given feedback on many different aspects such as posture, clarifying the objective, not jumping across the drivers, laying out all the key drivers in advance, confirming assumptions etc.
The students were then split pair-wise to practice case interview in a role playing mode – once as an interviewer and once as an interviewee. The cases were chosen from leading case books and real cases. Greg supervised the entire session by rotating across interview groups. Each of the interview session lasted 30 minutes and it was followed by student feedback and Greg’s feedback. Greg emphasized on perfecting the first and last 5 minutes of the interview and in making sure to not make calculation mistake during analysis. He also demonstrated how to deliver a great summary in the end when the case gets closed. The cases covered were market sizing and a general business strategy case.
